Today at the World Economic Forum in Davos, Wilmar International – the world’s
largest palm oil trader – released the two-year Progress Update on its historic No Deforestation, No Peat, No Exploitation policy from December 2013.
In response to the report, Forest Heroes Chairman Scott Paul issued the following statement:
“Wilmar’s new progress report makes clear just how far they still have to go. But the fact is they’re still perhaps the most forward-looking commodity company in the world, whose actions sent a transformative signal that has disrupted an industry. The supply chain revolution is a work in progress, but it has begun.
“On-the-ground transformation is hard. It’s complicated and takes time. It is clear now with the benefit of hindsight that a 2015 deadline for full implementation was naïve. But the deadline helped create a political transformation in Southeast Asia – and today’s findings make clear that Wilmar may need to push even harder for political change to achieve its goals.
“The stakes are high, and when Wilmar comes up short they deserve to hear about it. But their policy includes an unprecedented degree of public transparency, and today we are seeing what that looks like in practice.”
